Tree infestation by insects #402755

Picture attached. What is the best way to get rid of this insect infestation? I presume this is harmful to the tree.

Based on your photo this looks like an old eastern tent caterpillar nest.  Take a look at our website and more photos.  These caterpillars are common pests of wild cherry trees. At this point, this nest looks old and the caterpillars may have gone.  You can use a long pole to break up the nest and let the birds eat them (If still in the nest).  http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/eastern-tent-caterpillar-trees
