Collection Date: May, 2017

Likely identification:
Subclass: Acari Order: Trombidiformes
Family: Trombidiidae
Common Name: Red velvet mites or rain bugs
Pest Status and Management Recommendations: It is impossible to be certain of the identity of this mite from the picture. However, it appears to be a red velvet mite, which occurs commonly in this area. They are not chiggers, and are considered a beneficial organism that feeds on various small insects and spiders. It is uncertain whether chiggers occur in Vermont. Probably occasionally, but they are not a significant problem worthy of concern.
Management: None required.
