Weed elimination #402207

Asked May 24, 2017, 2:56 PM EDT

Hello. I have been trying to eliminate the weed I have attached photos of for many years but no matter what I apply, they always return. If you able to identify what weed this is and how best to get rid of it I would greatly appreciate your help. Thank you. Russell Gontar Medfield, MA

Hello,

The plant appears to be the invasive Black Swallowwort. It is best to dig out all roots and the crown of each plant. The University of Maine has a good fact sheet detailing control measures at this link.

Thanks very much Carol. When I looked at pictures of swallowwort, I recognized the pods, but don't see any on the current outgrowth. Are those still to come? I have seen those pods around too so I am wondering if I have two types of invasive species? Are you certain this is swallowwart?

Hi,

I am not positive the plant in your photo is swallowwort. You can let the plant grow and flower for more identifying features to compare to the known pictures.
It is too early in the season for the flowers and subsequent seed pods.
