Fir Tree To be or Not to be #401979

Asked May 23, 2017, 3:26 PM EDT

I have a fir tree that I thought was dying but now there is new growth at the top and sprouts throughout.  It it next to a wall of trees and I do not want to infect any others if it is diseased but do not want to lose a tree if it is recovering.

Arapahoe County Colorado

Expert Response

New growth shoots at twig ends is encouraging.

Don't assume that the only possible causes for its unhealthy appearance is either disease or insects.  Although those are possible, very often the cause(s) is environmental, drought, weather-related or cultural practices.

Try to get some more water to the rooting area of this tree.

If you can, prune out any dead wood (having no live needles).  Dead wood is brittle and snaps easily when bent.
