weed in flower bed and lnearby lawn #401337

Asked May 20, 2017, 7:09 PM EDT

I attach 2 pictures of weeds that are growing rampantly in my flower beds and have spread into nearby turf. What type of weed is it? How can it be treated so as to reduce or eliminate it? I have been pulling them, but that is time-consuming and they still come back. Thanks for any guidance.

We are not entirely sure and can't tell from your photo.
Did you just mulch over these weeds this year?
Could it be a perennial weed like our native wild violets breaking thru the layer of mulch? Did you notice little purple flowers in the area earlier in the spring?
One way to check is to dig down into the soil under the base of the plants and check for small bulblets or a thick crown. If it's violets, you will find them, and that is the part that needs to be removed to prevent their spread.

Here is our page on wild violets: http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/wild-violet
If you don't find bulblets or crowns where lots of leaves attach under these plants, let us know, and include a close up of the growing leaves coming from the ground.

You can attach that directly to that this reply.
