2017 Cicadas #401232

Asked May 20, 2017, 10:34 AM EDT

One of the Baltimore TV Stations had a news report about the 2017 Cicadas. I live in North East, MD in Cecil County and I just noticed dead Cicadas on the house and some trees. I have seen some live ones, but I Never heard them, this year. On the news report they said that the University of Maryland are trying to track the Cicadas, so that's why I'm emailing you.

Expert Response

Thank you for contacting us about the cicadas. The periodical cicadas emerging now are different from the annual cicadas we typically see in late summer. What we are seeing now is an accelerated emergence from the periodical Brood X. Periodical cicadas live underground as immature nymphs for 13 or 17 years, depending on the “brood” or unique population to which they belong. They emerge in a 13 or 17-year cycle, typically, but sometimes there are "stragglers" that emerge outside of their normal cycle. Here is an article published by University of Maryland entomologist Dr. Mike Raupp on the current cicada emergence we are seeing in our region: http://bugoftheweek.com/blog/2017/5/15/periodical-cicadas-up-and-out-of-the-ground-in-maryland-dc-an...

You can report your sitings on the magicicada.org website. Researchers use this data to track the different populations of cicadas.
