white veins squash leaves #401215

Asked May 20, 2017, 6:32 AM EDT

Some of my squash and pumpkin plants, which have been in the garden since the first week of May, have started getting white veins in the leaves (picture). (The beige coloring on the border was addressed in an earlier question to Ask an Expert, where the expert said it was probably nutritional deficiency because I started them inside). What is causing the white veins, and what if anything needs to be done about it? Thanks.

Expert Response

Good Morning,

This looks like normal coloration. Some varieties in the squash family (squash, cucumber, watermelon, etc) have a natural whiteness around the leaf veins.

As the season progresses, you can monitor your plants for some of the common diseases like downy mildew and powdery mildew. Check out the great photos at the two links below. You may also bring a sample by the office in La Plata.
