Korean Maple #400834

Asked May 18, 2017, 2:30 PM EDT

Hello, I planted this Korean maple last August and was just wondering if the damage on it (pictures taken this spring) can be identified, Most of the leafless branches appear to be alive, as they are red, soft. and pliable...with small buds that appeared to have tried to emerge . The new leafs on the affected branches that DID appear seem to have wilted and fallen off, or not budded at all... May be interesting to note that on two of the tallest and. affected leaders, i noticed a medium sized mass that could be compared to a 1/2 of a single cotton ball being really stretched out into a strand, maybe a foot long... spanning between the 2 branches....almost like a webbing, On more careful inspection of the tree, nothing else like that was noted ...no other webbing anywhere..... could be that something got snagged on the top of the tree?... thanks for your time...very appreciated.

Korean maples have not been proven to be reliably hardy here, so you are perhaps seeing some winter dieback. You should also consider how the tree was planted - was the hole the proper size and properly amended? How was the tree treated before planting? Was any burlap or wire cut away from the tree when it was planted? Was it planted to the proper depth? Also, look for insects such as scale and aphids and diseases such as anthracnose:

I'd make sure it is hydrated through dry spells and wait and see (and hold onto your receipt).
