My ornamental grape is has brown spots #400636

Asked May 17, 2017, 5:18 PM EDT

This is a fully mature ornamental grape. I have been in this house for 12 years and this is the first time I have seen this. The leaves show brown spots then eventually wither and die. Can you tell me what this is and how to treat it? Do I have remove all the diseased leaves from the area?

Expert Response

The grape family can be susceptible to various diseases. The spotting could be one of several of which I am aware. I suspect black rot but it is impossible to be sure from a photo alone. Without having a sample (piece of vine with live affected leaves attached) to send to the lab, I can only recommend removing as much affected tissue (leaves and stems) as possible then spraying with a fungicide labeled for use on grapes. Repeat as recommended on the product label.

A simplified spray schedule is here with suggested fungicides:  https://gallatin.ca.uky.edu/files/backyard_grape_spray_guide.pdf
Read and follow all label instructions before applying all pesticides.
