Needle loss on Black hills spruce #400450

Asked May 16, 2017, 9:20 PM EDT

What is causing the needle loss on our spruce tree. I noticed some issue with interior branches last year but this spring it is getting very bad. Is there anything we4 can do to stop this?

Expert Response

There are several possibilities for your needle loss. The most common is simply that the inner parts of branches are shaded and do not receive sunlight. The needles then turn brown and drop. This is a natural process. The other is the possibility of one of several diseases that affect spruce. I cannot see black fungi dots on the photos but you really need to look at the branches and needles with a magnifying glass. Check the diseases in this link. http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/yard-garden/trees-shrubs/spruce-tree-diseases/index.html  If anything seems to match you should have a certified arborist do an on-site exam.
