Tree identification #398607

Asked May 08, 2017, 5:03 PM EDT

Can you help me identify this tree? Unusual flowers bloom seemingly from the bark. And, the trunk is reddish-brown with many lenticels. I have included photos. Let me know if you need additional information. Thanks for your help.

Expert Response

We think this might be a buckthorn, given the flower type, leaf shape, and the prominent lenticels on the older growth. There are several types of buckthorns (glossy, Carolina). We think yours might be the glossy buckthorn, given the smooth leaf margin. Here is some information on the glossy buckthorn, from Virginia Tech. http://dendro.cnre.vt.edu/dendrology/syllabus/factsheet.cfm?ID=738
