diseased oak tree #397677

Asked May 03, 2017, 10:05 PM EDT

We have an oak tree that has some disease on the trunk. There are lots of ant type bugs coming in and out of the hole in the tree. We live in Ocean Pines. The tree is about 15' from the house and is in the shade. The tree is much taller than our two story home. The ground around the tree is mostly roots, dirt and some weeds. I will upload pictures. Can anything be done? If not, can we just let it be? Thank you,

We viewed your photos.  We notice some lichens on the trunk (which are not a reason for any decline) http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/lichens-trees-and-shrubs, some old damage(old wound) to the trunk, and possible insects like carpenter ants. They like to nest in damp wood but they do not eat the wood like a termite. If the tree is putting out new shoot growth and looks healthy,  you can let it be.

However, we are not on site and you may want to contact several certified arborists for an onsite diagnosis regarding the health of the tree and the best way to proceed. http://www.treesaregood.org/
