Lawn grass weed identification #397318

Asked May 02, 2017, 2:30 PM EDT

Can you please review the attached photos and kindly identify this weed in my lawn? Could you recommend a herbicide to treat and remove?

Expert Response

Hello,

It is difficult to identify a grass just from your photos. It looks like it could be a tall fescue called Kentucky 31. It grows earlier than surrounding desirable turfgrasses appearing as a weed in your lawn. Either dig it out or spot treat with an herbicide containing glyphosate. Glyphosate will kill all plants it touches, therefore be careful of over spray. Broadleaf weed killers will not work as this is a grass. Reseed with a turf grass you prefer.

Is it quack grass?

It could be. Does it have clasping auricles and a short ligule in the collar region? Quackgrass has strong and aggressive rhizomes emanating from the crown. These are identifying characteristics not shown in your photo. Tall fescue and ryegrasses are similar but lack elongeted rhizomes, and grow in clumps.
