I saw this post on Pinterest and am not able to decipher it. I think it might make a good project with the grandkids.
1. Do the sprouts growing from the cone in the post appear to be growing from the cone itself?
2. If not, what other types of seeds might at least start if sprinkled into an upright cone standing in water?
3. If successful, could the cone and sprouts be planted directly into soil?
4. Will the sprouts get their nutrition from the cone itself?
5. The second photo is of a cone I gathered near Sisters, Oregon I don't know what kind of tree is it from, Eastern Pine?

the seeds germinated in the cone....no other plant types that I could consider. And yes, you could stick that cone in the ground and it would grow (providing you do the water nutrients thing). The sprouts won't get anything from the cone (cone is dried-out and has only supplied a vessel for the seeds to sprout....now they need a home. That cone in the pic is a ponderosa pine, not eastern or lodgepole or white or suger....ponderosa is the one.
