Can you identify this animal from its poo/droppings/scat? #395142
Asked April 21, 2017, 6:12 PM EDT
A larger mammal is doing its business in our raised bed gardens this spring (4 times so far) ... there are no plantings in our gardens yet. Can you identify the animal and tell me what I can do to deter the animal and increase safety of my garden produce?

Expert Response
From the pictures I cannot tell what animal left the droppings. I don't see any animal hair so it may be an animal that is a vegetarian. It might be a dog, raccoon, fox or other animal. I suggest you take the droppings to the Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife. They may have a biologist who can look at it. I am including a URL to the Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife Contacts. Give them a call to see if they have a biologist.
You can also but a thin layer of flour around the garden to see if they leave tracks to identify. You can put up a fence with chicken wire or hardware cloth. Both of these have small holes to keep animals out.
