identifying a grassy weed (poa annua vs crab grass?) #395114

Asked April 21, 2017, 4:18 PM EDT

We are trying to identify & treat this grassy weed in our lawn that has been spreading aggressively this year. Originally we though it was crab grass, but from the looks of it this Spring we think it is some type of undesirable grass like annual bluegrass which apparently germinates later in the season that crabgrass. Any help on identifying this weed or how to eliminate it would be greatly appreciated!!! The patches are a lighter green than the rest of the lawn and we can see seed heads forming now but not quite spread yet. We did reseed last fall and especially watering sections where this weed had been spot treated and removed, so I think we might have encouraged it's germination/spreading.

Expert Response

based on the picture provided it is likley orchard grass or annual bluegrass (poa annua).  The lighter green color suggests it might be orchard grass but a more detailed review that examines the root structure and feel of the blade will result in a more definitive identification as well as available treatment options.
I believe you will find this link very helpful.
