I have several mature trees in my backyard woods that look as if the bark is being scraped off in large patches.

We sould guess that these are ash trees that have died or are dying from the invasive Emerald Ash Borer. Woodpeckers and squirrels are investigating, and taking advantage of the feeding and excavating sites on the trees.
