Woolly Adelgid #388476

Asked March 12, 2017, 5:59 PM EDT

To whom it may concern, I'm looking for help/assistance in treating several of my hemlocks that are infested with Woolly Adelgid...Trees have been infested with this insect for several years now and they are looking "thin" and not nearly as green as I once remembered..I have been treating with Bayer Advanced Tree & Shrub Insect Control with very little success...all of the trees are rather large and impossible to spray..Is it possible to send predatory beetles to help save the trees? Hi Robert:
There are some insecticides that a licensed applicator could use.  One is Safari (active ingredient is dinotefuran) that is applied as a spray to the trunk.  Imidacloprid at a strong concentration than you have been using in the Bayer product as a soil injection or soil drench.  I cannot recommend a specific company.  However, look at the International Society of Arboriculture website for Certified Arborists, or the Yellow Pages for companies that have ads stating they have Certified Arborists on staff.  They can assess the situation.
The lady beetles that have been released for HWA are not commercially available.  It is time and labor intensive to rear them so the cost is prohibitive for the general public.
