My Koean Dogwood (about 8 years old) has developed spots on its bark. See photo. Bugs? Deer? What is this and should we do something to protect it. Spots occur on trunk as well as branches.

The peeling bark, which is what it looks like is happening when I zoom into your photo, is characteristic of this species of dogwood.
