Pine beetle? #380084

Asked December 19, 2016, 10:56 AM EST

After cutting down a dead pine tree in my backyard, I was surprised to find insect tunnels in the wood. As I have several pine trees on my property, are there any recommendations on spotting insect activity, treatment, etc. for pine trees?

Expert Response

If this particular tree had been dead for a while, the insects you more than likely encountered were feeding and tunneling on the dead wood and not live wood. That being said, there are some bores that tunnel into and throughout pines. Here is a link to a publication about "Borers that attach Landscape Pines."

In order for us to know for sure what insects caused the tunneling in the tree you cut down we would need a sample of the insect.  If you catch the insect you can take it to your local Extension Office for identification.
