Deformed peony buds #378567

Asked November 30, 2016, 6:09 AM EST

We have a small commercial peony farm on the island of Tasmania. We have around 6000 plants across 6 varieties. I have a question about peony buds. I’m hoping you may be able to help me as KSU has many years’ experience in peony research. After an unusually cold and wet Spring, we have many buds this year that are misshaped/deformed. I’ve heard them called “cabbage heads”, “bull nosed”, “cigar”, “flat top”, etc. See attached. We’ve had a few buds like this in the past, in a couple of varieties, but this year it’s quite widespread across many varieties. They look unsightly and usually fail to open. This represents quite a loss of productive stems for us. I’ve heard a number of theories as to why these buds do this, from Boron deficiency, to too much nutrition, to a cold chill at time of bud set. Do you know the reason these buds misform and what is the cure? Any advice would be very much appreciated. Kind regards Caleb Wright Misty Mountain Peonies, Tasmania, Australia

Mr. Wright,
I was not able to view the attachment you mentioned. Would you like to send it to my personal email address: <personal data hidden>.
I'll try to refer you to someone that has experience with peony problems. Can you tell me if the flower buds were very subjected to frost at any time during their formation? Weather records in Launceston indicate overnight temperatures a few degrees above freezing during November but you are at a higher elevation.
