Oleanders not blooming #374509

Asked November 02, 2016, 5:03 PM EDT

I have three oleander plants, very large ones, over a 7' fence large.  Two of the plants' blooms are
a dark  red and the third one has blooms that are what I would call a coral red. The problem is
that the coral red one blooms all the time, all year long and the two red one hardly bloom at all.
What can I do to help the two red oleanders bloom.  I have my gardeners top all of them just
below the fence in November. We have a wet lot but with good drainage and some scattered
clay deposits.

Oleander varieties do not all bloom equally well. If they are getting full sunlight there is not much more you can do to get them to bloom. Keep in mind that they  bloom on new growth so don't do any pruning after the start of the spring season or you'll be cutting away potential bloom buds on the new branches.

Thank you for your reply. Is there  a fertilizer that can be used to urge blooming?  Do oleanders
prefer a sandy soil?  Do we need to add something to  the soil make it more alkaline? The oleanders
in Galveston  grow like weeds and are bountiful with flowers.

Oleander tolerate a range of soils. I would just use a turf type fertilizer in moderation in spring. They shouldn't need much encouragement to bloom.
