I found around 12 caterpillars at a Willow Oak I have at home. I didn't see more, but I don't know if there, because is a big tree. Is this harmful to the tree? If I need to remove the caterpillars, how can I do? (Pictures)

Expert Response
Thanks for your question. This is a pink-striped Oak Worm Moth. The caterpillar can be harmful to the oak tree, because they're just little eating machines! Here's a link to a comprehensive article about them from U of Florida extension. You'll see photos of the eggs, as well as the overwintering pupa (in the soil.) At the end of the article are suggested cultural management and chemical control. Especially important is the use of insecticides with Bt, an organic control.
