Pinyon Pine disease #373359

Asked October 28, 2016, 6:40 PM EDT

I have three older ( 30 yr) Pinyon's in my yard that are oozing a pine scented gooey substance. After doing a little research on the internet I believe I have found the culprit. I think this is the "Pine Mass borer". The areas that are effected seem to be mainly at crotch areas where limbs come out from the trunk. The trees appear to be healthy except when you look closely at the trunks. Am I correct in thinking this is what the culprit is? and if so what do you suggest to spray the trees with?

Expert Response

It appears that your trees do indeed have an infestation of pinyon pitch mass borer. Unfortunately, there is little that can be done at this time of year. You may have some success success with trying to dig the larvae out of the tree, but it is pretty labor intensive with less than great results.

The best time to try to control this borer is during the summer when the larvae have pupated and become adults that are flying outside the tree. Spraying the entire tree at least twice during the summer with permethrin for at least several years can result in some control of this insect. Complete coverage is important.
