Apple damage identification #372504

Asked October 24, 2016, 8:27 PM EDT

Hello, again. I've uploaded some images of the kind of damage we had on our apples this year. As I mentioned in my previous email, I used just Sevin to spray the trees, using an Ortho Dial-a-spray. It was at 1.5 oz per gallon. There was a lot of rain this year, and it's possible that I missed some days. Plus, I've read that even though it says 7-10 days, Sevin may not be effective after 4-5 days. Don't know for sure. The pictures show the damage of nearly every apple on the tree (Regent). According to Ortho, the Flower, Tree and Garden insecticide that contains Acetimiprid is highly effective against codling moth, apple maggot and plum curculio. From these pictures, it would appear that it's the codling moth and/or apple maggot. Based on this, which other insecticides besides the Ortho can you recommend. Thanks very much.

Expert Response

According to our Extension entomologist, Jeff Hahn , this appears to be plum curculio damage and possibly some apple maggot damage. Hatched codling moth larvae tunnel towards the core and feed on the seeds. They leave behind telltale brown frass (excrement) when they exit the apple.

Because available chemical treatments change from year to year, Jeff recommended reading that you check out our Extension publication on Pest Management for the Home Apple Orchard next spring to see the most current recommendations.
