Two apple tree problems #371065

Asked October 18, 2016, 6:17 PM EDT

My Harrison Cider Apple tree has a hole and has what looks like orange foam coming out of it. I originally though some sort of gummosis but it is not sticky. It is hard and crumbly. The top inch or so of the tree has since died and it has sprung a new growth from just below that. On my other apple tree, which is a Smokehouse variety, there is a white growth near the base below the graft line. It is firmly attached and does not seem to scrape off. Thank you so much for your help!

Expert Response

You could have a borer problem. Normally borer holes push out frass, a combination of saw dust, insect excrement, and sap. I recommend you take a sample to your local Penn State Extension and have them send it to Penn State entomology clinic for analysis.
