Expert Response

There are a number of things that cause trees to drop needles. Drought and insect damage are the usual answers. Right now, trees are stressed by drought. Many of them are shedding needles and leaves to cut their loses. However, since your damage is in a specific area, you may have insect damage. Because of the size of your tree, I recommend you call a licensed arborist. Here is a link to the International Society of Horticulture where they have a zip code database to help you find an arborist in your area.
