25' Norway Spruce problem #367566

Asked October 03, 2016, 4:16 PM EDT

We have a dozen 25' Norway Spruce trees. Almost all needles on one of them have completely turned brown, and are falling.  Another has about 4 branches in the center of the tree that the needles have turned brown.  The rest of the trees seem ok, aside from deer attacking them. Will they grow back, or are they doomed?

Expert Response

Hi - Unfortunately, I can not be certain of your Norway Spruce's problem.

Check around the dying branches and look for places where the tree is leaking white resin (sap). If you see this, you probably have Cytospora canker.  http://extension.illinois.edu/focus/index.cfm?problem=cytospora-canker-of-spruce

Another possibility is Armillaria root rot, however, Norway Spruce is fairly resistant to this disease.http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/yard-garden/trees-shrubs/spruce-tree-diseases/armillaria-root-ro...

If these aren't the answer, then flip through the slide show to see if you can find your problem: http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/assistance/backyard/treecare/forest_health/whitesprucediagnosis.pdf

did you treat your lawn with anything this summer/fall. we are seeing lots of herbicide damage in iowa this year and  drift from adjacent farm fields.

Norways are very sensitive of picloram (tordon) and even a little  will brown the trees.
