growing conifers in shelter tubes #364469

Asked September 21, 2016, 10:06 AM EDT

I will be planting new fir concolor seedlings next week using 5 feet shelter tubes. Since conifers branch out from the bottom, will the the branches grow on the 5 feet inside the tube, or the trees will look like a pipe cleaning brush? Mario

Expert Response

Apparently, there are deer in the area where the trees will be planted. Our concern would be heat buildup inside the tubes, especially in early spring. We would suggest a deer repellent be used to prevent deer injury or a protective deer fence.
