pine trees on mountain #364172

Asked September 20, 2016, 10:15 AM EDT

Saw a small group of pine trees on FSR 179 last weekend that had all the new cones right at the top of the trees in big globs. Is this a disease, bug, or nature? Why just in one small area?

Expert Response

This looks to me like this is a Subalpine Fir tree.  While that is very dense cone production, it is common for this tree to produce cones in abundance near the tops of the trees as seen in your picture.  Here is a link to an extension publication out of Utah that provides a good description of Subalpine Fir's growth characteristics and cone production.  http://extension.usu.edu/rangeplants/htm/subalpine-fir
