Pruning hibiscus #363949

Asked September 19, 2016, 1:52 PM EDT

I have two hibiscus bushes that have gotten rather large.  Please advise if there is an optimum size for these plants and how and when to prune them to maintain the desired size.

Great job on growing some healthy hibiscus plants! There is not a standard size for hibiscus so it is up to you as to how large you want them to grow. You can leave them unpruned or cut them back a little periodically to maintain them at a smaller size. I would not cut them back after about August each year since pruning promotes tender new growth which will be more susceptible to cold damage in the winter.
