I am new to planting and would like to start with your recommendations. I have been purchasing through e-bay but they don't list the specific type. Where can i find these Rootstocks and cultivars you recomend for sale in the Dallas/Waco area?
Advances have been made in Texas walnut culture by Dr. Loy Shreve. He demonstrated that the native Texas Black Walnut, Juglans microcarpa, is a far superior rootstock for walnuts growing in high pH soils of Texas than the Eastern Black Walnut, Juglans nigra, or the California Black Walnut, Juglans hindsii. Growth of 10 feet or more the first year has been obtained with the Texas Black Walnut rootstock. Other rootstocks made little or no growth.
Cultivars
The need for an outstanding variety with “Walnut Blight” resistance has long been appreciated by Dr. Shreve. He traveled to Hungary and Romania in 1979 and collected several promising cultivars which were evaluated at the TAMU Center at Uvalde. The best cultivars to date are Reda, Geoagiu 86, Orastie, Germisara, and Geoagiu 3 X 4 X 453. Under Texas conditions, these cultivars appear to be superior to the standard commercial varieties Payne, Eureka, Hartley, and Broadview.

"Texas Black Walnut rootstock...... cultivars are Reda, Geoagiu 86, Orastie, Germisara, and Geoagiu 3 X 4 X 453"
This is what was recommended in your article.
Thanks, Kyle
Hello Kyle, I was able to find a nursery that carries Juglans microcarpa which is mentioned in the article: http://www.bigtextrees.com/ they are in Houston. It appears that they are a commercial seller. https://www.tytyga.com/Texas-trees-a/309.htm is a Georgia nursery that sells several types of walnut trees on various rootstocks. The cultivars you mention from the article were being used in trials and its hard to tell if any of them are available commercially or not. My suggestion is to speak to the Texas nurseries to see what they have to recommend. I was not able to find out where individual rootstocks could be purchased. Contact TAMU Horticulture. They may be able to direct you to more information about the availability of specific rootstock.
