Linden Greenspire #360375

Asked September 06, 2016, 11:34 PM EDT

Our Greenspire has started dying back. There is something growing on the underside of each leaf that is turning yellow and dying. What is causing it and how do remedy the problem.

Expert Response

Hello,
From your photos, it is hard for me to tell whether the leaves affected are the youngest, the oldest or random.  The proliferance of leaf hairs at the underside base of the leaf could possibly be in response to sap-feeding insects, such as spider mites.  This feeding can also cause stippled yellowing of the leaves.  the sap-feeding insects typically cause costmetic damage only.

Some yellowing and leaf drop naturally occurs after hot weather, such as we experienced this summer.

Before choosing a treatment, the actual cause of the yellowing needs to be determined.  You may choose to bring in a sample branch to the Jefferson County Plant Clinic, where we can determine the cause and recommend whether/what treatment is needed.    http://jeffco.extension.colostate.edu/horticulture/plant-diagnostic-clinic/
