Fungus on my Maple tree #359760

Asked September 05, 2016, 10:45 AM EDT

Can you tell me about this fungus growing on this maple tree? It has been present for several years and is getting worse. Branches at the top of the crown are dying back and the trunk, about 5' from the ground, has several wood pecker holes in it and the bark for an 8" w x 30" h area around those holes has separated from the sapwood - can tell by knocking on the bark. Any thoughts or advice? Would like to keep the tree and save it. Would it be helpful to cut away the separated bark? Thank you.

Expert Response

Your tree has several issues happening and it is not possible to give you an answer from a few photos. You need an on-site inspection by a certified arborist. A mature tree is valuable and worth saving if possible. Go to this site, click on Find An Arborist and put in your zip code to find an arborist in your area: http://treesaregood.com/home.aspx

I'm disappointed that you don't have other feedback or dialogue about this issue. I have no problem calling an arborist but am looking for more information first. Please forward this question and photos to others who may have the experience necessary to share some insights as to what I'm dealing with.

Thank you.
