Mushrooms growing on Birch Tree #359533

Asked September 04, 2016, 3:17 PM EDT

This summer mushrooms began to grow on my birch tree. The center part of the clump of birch died, and I think that's why the mushrooms began. I do have some new birch trees sprouting next to this clump that I would love to try to keep and hope that the invading mushrooms don't take over. Do you have any tips as to how to kill the mushrooms but not harm the tree? We essentially are cutting down the bigger/older part of the tree to help, but I'm not sure if that's all we can do since some of the mushrooms are growing in the rocks around the tree. Do you have any ideas?

The fungi cannot be managed to help the tree the fungi are there because the tree is in decline for other reasons. Look for D-shaped holes in the trunk you might have borers. The tree will probably not come back from this stress. The trunk with the dead at the top is a goner just waiting to die.

The fungi are not growing on the rocks.  Perhaps the roots. Or you may be seeing lichens on the rocks which are not threatening.
