Tree growing out of a tree...what to do?!? #358259

Asked August 31, 2016, 7:13 AM EDT

Hi, It looks like we have a Salix Caprea (Goat/Pussy Willow) growing OUT OF our Japanese Dappled Willow. Any thoughts? Cut the branch and hope for the best? Seal the hole? Leave the hole so it doesn't break out somewhere else? We are guessing it is a Salix Caprea because we read somewhere that is a tree they graft from and the leaves seem to match it. We are totally guessing here...help! We don't want to lose the Willow, the Dappled Willow. Thanks in advance for any advice!! (Esp. since we also have another one that is about a year behind.)

Expert Response

Hi:
You can just prune the branch out. Don't seal anything. The tree will heal over the pruning would. This link covers proper pruning practices.
