apple tree scale #355970

Asked August 23, 2016, 6:27 PM EDT

my friend & I seriously pruned old neighbor's apple tree spring 2015--last yr, lots of blossoms & apples, so we thinned them out this yr, just did some sprout pruning--but I think her mower has cut back some branches--but some of the trunk(s) on that tree have lost bark (not completely around, maybe halfway), have this (stepped up) scale? they stick out half an inch, perhaps more. Any remedy?

Expert Response

The white protrusions on the trunk are fungus, not scale.  This tree is almost entirely dead and the fungus is breaking down the dead wood.  The fungus is not killing the tree; it is simply taking advantage of the situation.  Unfortunately, this tree has declined too far to be saved.
