Expert Response

Without additional information, it is difficult to determine an apple variety from the many possibilities. Are you certain that it is an "old-time" variety? It looks like the tree might be only about 15 years old. Is it ripe now? If so, it could be one of the Gala strains, and the fruit shape and foliage are not unlike Gala. I suggest buying a locally grown Gala and comparing it to yours for shape, angles of the stem and sepal cavities, flesh texture and taste. Attached is a view of our Buckeye Gala at Winchester, VA this morning. The spots and smudges on the close-up of your fruit are the fungal diseases, sooty blotch and flyspeck, not part of Gala's natural appearance.
