Asked August 18, 2016, 8:13 PM EDT

I soded my yard in 2002 and have had s beautiful yard ever since! This year, however, my yard is slowly being taken over by a thick grass. Can you please tell me what is is and how to take care of it? We live in Blaine and do have an irrigation system. Please help! Thanks so much in advance!

Expert Response

I can't see the whole plant so identification is not possible. I suggest pulling up the weeds and comparing  them to the weeds in the fact sheets. If the weeds are annuals then control is easily done with a pre emergent in the spring. If it is a perennial then killing a grass in a bed of grass is more difficult.

Here's a picture of the roots.  Does this help you identify the type of grass growing in our yard?
