Apple tree #354266

Asked August 18, 2016, 12:26 PM EDT

I am trying to figure out what I need to do to get my apple tree to produce good fruit. We just moved into a house with an apple tree that has been very neglected. We thinned it out but it's fruit is no good. We live in Lafayette.

Expert Response

Hello,
From the photo it looks like you may have some insect/disease issues in your apples. Most fruit trees will need proper fertilizing, water and pest management to produce good quality fruit. The Extension publications below will help answer some of your questions about general orchard care and which pests and diseases to be concerned about and how to treat for them.

If you like, you can also bring a sample of the fruit into the Yamhill County Extension office and Master Gardeners can identify the issues with your apples.

The office info is below:

Will you be able to tell me what kind a Apple tree it is also. Does it cost anything to tell me what I am dealing with if I drop it off?

Hello,
Unfortunately, our Master Gardeners do not have training in apple identification (plus with so many varieties it is very challenging), therefore we recommend you contact the Home Orchard Society regarding identifying your type of tree. They have an event in the fall for apple ID.

Dropping off a sample (if you are interested in insect/disease ID for your apple) to the Master Gardeners is free!
