Vining Weed Identification #352608

A friend of mine had an area cleared out last year. He had a bush that this vine wrapped itself around the bush. When he had the area cleared out, he assumed that this vining weed went with it, but it didn't. I'm assuming because it came back, that the origin of the weed wasn't removed and spreads underground by rhizomes. What is this weed and how does he get rid of it? Thank you.

I can't tell what it is exactly from those pictures. You are correct it is probably rhizomes in the soil. You can you use a broadleaf weed killer that is safe for lawns like weed b gon, or products containing 2,4-D. You might need repeat applications. If you want to submit some additional photos of the plants where we can see the leaf shape we might be able to id it.
I'm attaching 2 more pictures - 1) a close up picture of the weed he dug up with the roots and 2) a close up of one of the leaves. I hope this helps to identify the weed and solution. Thank you!
I am on vacation this week and will try to make an id when I return. Although from those photos and the small size I am not sure I will be able to make a positive id. Whatever it is the control recommendation I gave in the above email will still apply.
