what is hurting my tree #352203

Asked August 11, 2016, 11:16 AM EDT

Can you please tell me what might be wrong with my tree? I live in a town home association and they replaced a ash tree with this tree two years ago. I am not sure what type of tree this is nor do I know what is eating the tree. It looks terrible and yet the lawn service for the association says that there is nothing wrong with the tree. Any help or direction you can provide is most appreciated.

Expert Response

Hello:

Thank you for your message and for contacting Kiowa State University. It appears your tree is a linden tree and it has had a small amount of feeding damage from the Japanese beetle. The linden tree is one of the favorite food plants of the Japanese beetle and in large numbers, the beetles can totally defoliate the tree, making every leaf lacy and brown.

Here is a link to more information about this common pest.

Thanks.
