30 yr old Crab Apple #348883

Asked August 01, 2016, 1:11 PM EDT

Hello, I live in Castle Rock have Crab Apple we planted 30 yrs ago always hearty.  I am seeing several branches with dry up leaves, Like they have no water, I do not see any insect nest or eating on them.  They curl up but stay attached they do have a dark spot about 1/2 pencil size.  We have had no less than 10 hail storms this yr. they have destroyed our flowers and knocked & shredded  leaves on other trees, Silver maples, Ponderosa Pine, could this be the result on the Crab? I can send photo if you would like.  Thank You Jerry

Expert Response

Hello Jerry,

Thank you for contacting the CSU Master Gardener Office. I am sorry to hear about your trees. Hail on our plants and trees is heartbreaking and can do great damage as you know. About your crabapple tree, to best diagnose what you are describing, a photo of the whole tree, and then a couple of different angles of the affected part would greatly help us better determine what may be the issue. If you would like to send photos of your other trees we would be happy to look at those as well. You will need to send small images and one photo at a time as our computer system is set up this way. Let us know what area in Douglas County you are located in as well.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thank you.

Carol
