peeling bark of hawthorne tree #347928

Asked July 29, 2016, 1:40 PM EDT

Hello: We planted a hawthorne tree three years ago. It flowers and produces berries, but the bark about a foot, two up from the ground appears to be peeling. You can see the cracks and I wonder if this is common to this variety?

Anoka County Minnesota

Expert Response

There are several varieties of Hawthorn hardy in Minnesota, including nine native to the state.  Some of them have naturally occurring exfoliating bark which peels off.  Some do not.

If you can find out which Hawthorn you have and then check it out online, the peeling bark issue should be made clear.

Sorry to not be of more help.
