Asian Pear Problem #345477

Asked July 22, 2016, 9:52 AM EDT

I have a pair of 6 year old asian pear trees that produced a reasonable amount of good fruit last season. This season the shinko pear fruit is all splitting (see photo). I would guess this has something to do with weather conditions this year but I am baffled because the 2nd pear (variety olympic) located 8 feet away is producing a large crop of normal fruit without splitting. Am I missing something?

Expert Response

Some cultivars are more susceptible to cracking and splitting than others.  It is also impossible to say what the nature of the soil is under the trees even though your trees are only 8 feet apart.  Rocks and springs can be anywhere.  In the future, if there is not an inch of rain in a week you could consider irrigating your trees to keep the moisture level even.  The splitting is almost certainly due to uneven moisture in the tree and irrigation might help.  vw
