Dutchman's Pipe Vine disease #344844

Asked July 20, 2016, 10:23 AM EDT

I have large Dutchman's Pipe Vines covering telephone poles and they have always been healthy. This year a number of the leaves are shrivelled and wrinkled. They do not turn brown but remain shrivelled on the vine. Any comments on what this may be. Thanks Everett Clausen

The vine is in Quebec north of Montreal and the leaves are getting withered and wrinkled.

If I had your Email address I could send a picture of the affected leaves

Thanks

Everett,

You can attach pictures below by clicking on Choose file and adding them there.  My email is <personal data hidden> also.

Shrivelled leaves can be caused by aphids/mites etc feeding on the newly expanding leaves and by sucking out the juice cause the leaves to develop misshapenly.  Also if an herbicide drifted onto the leaves that could cause them to wrinkle too.

Is there specific action to take against the aphid/mites if they are indeed there.

Will the vine survive this situation and bounce back next year or could it be fatal.

Everett,

You can use safer's soap or a drop of dish soap in a pint of water sprayer to create a drying solution that would affect the aphids ability to breathe through their skins.  It works on soft-bodied insects and can work on some mites too.  Otherwise you can purchase insecticides labeled for aphids and miticides/acaricides for your mites.
