My garden phlox has holes... #344769

Asked July 19, 2016, 10:41 PM EDT

My garden phlox has holes on the edges of the leaves which look like they were made by leafcutter bees or a similar insect. The photo isn't the best example. The stems affected turn yellow, shrivel up and die. "Uncut" stems are fine. Is it physical damage? Spread of disease? What kind of insect? Can I treat it? Bob Ebbeskotte Delphos, Ohio

I am attaching a link to the Missouri Botanical Garden.  From the damage in your photo it may be beetles causing the damage to your leaves.  Review the article and see if it matches what your seeing. It gives recommendations on how to treat for the beetles.

I don't see any bugs or beetles on the leaves in your photo however your description of the issues indicates it is most likely beetles or bugs.  In fact there are Phlox Plant Bugs. You can treat the Phlox Plant Bugs with a botanic pesticide such as insecticidal soap.
