Fungus on Maple tree #344651

Asked July 19, 2016, 4:10 PM EDT

I just noticed this fungus growing from a hole in our huge maple tree. It is a moist, spongy fungus. The tree seems otherwise healthy The tree is quite old, about 4' in diameter at the base. Is this something to be concerned about?

Anything we can do to slow down/stop progression of the disease?

You could remove the mushroom (the visible fruiting body of the fungus), but there will still be microscopic mycelia growing on the trunk, so there is good possibility that even after removing the mushroom now, it will grow back again next season.
