It is difficult to say what came out of the cocoon without seeing it. It is most likely a large moth of some sort. Here is a link to photos but I can't say that it was a luna moth, just to show that it is similar. http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/misc/moths/luna_moth.htm
