Canning Simple Syrup to Give #343220

Asked July 15, 2016, 11:49 AM EDT

We're considering making a simple syrup, possibly infused, to give favors at our wedding. We've got a lot of people coming, so it'd be great to process them as if we were canning but in small bottles, ahead of time. Nearly everything I've seen says that simple syrup only holds for a couple weeks in the fridge, but I did see one video (http://www.growingagreenerworld.com/simple-syrup-video/) that used a hot water bath and canned them.

Is this idea feasible? If it is, are there any bottles that you would recommend for use, or just stick with small glass jars?

Thank you!

What a great idea! And yes, canning the syrup is what is needed for it to last longer and at room temperatures.

Go to the National Center for Home Food Preservation's website for tested, safe recipes: http://nchfp.uga.edu/

Here's a link for berry syrup specifically: http://nchfp.uga.edu/how/can_02/berry_syrup.html

If you’re not familiar with the steps for safe canning, there’s a link on the Berry Syrup page that explains it.

You asked about jars – using mason canning jars and two-piece canning lids is recommended to make sure they will be appropriate for the canning process. These days you can get lids in different colors and/or labels that can be personalized as a wedding memento.
